So what's involved in the process?
"It really varies – some designs come like a flash in my mind. I’m quite good at seeing things in my mind’s eye – so I’ll look at something and see it as a piece of jewellery. Some designs take forever. I don’t really have a set process… I’d love to be one of those people with gorgeous sketchbooks with lots of inspirational pictures and pressed flowers and wonderful scribbles stuck in… but the reality is, more often than not, I see it in my head and then I have a go at ‘building it’ – my sketch book is sparse, but the rejects jar on my desk tells a very different story!!"
Using traditional techniques and the fact each piece is individually handcrafted by you makes your pieces really unique - I wonder how you feel about sustainability in this and how do you try weave it into the business?
"Sustainability is so important – It's something that I've been more aware of since having my daughter I think and I've tried to make sustainability swaps both in my business and in my life in general and I've made loads of good swaps so I use ecosilver in the vast majority of my designs and I send things out in Cardboard boxes that can be recycled rather than plastic jiffy bags but I'm always aware that there's more that I can do there's always more that I can do I'm not perfect at all not even close but it is a theme that runs throughout I think that we need to aim to leave the world in a better place for future generations."
I love the Dette Er Meg collection - has there been anything in particular that’s guided you to make the way you do where do you get your inspiration from?
"My inspiration comes from my surroundings a lot of the time. I never really set out to make collections of jewellery, I started making commissions and it sort of grew into having collections. The Dette er Meg collection came from a pendant commission piece with the owners initial on it and after chatting to them further about it, I got thinking about symbols and Nordic Runes. I really loved the idea of wearing a symbol that's actually a trait - without wearing the word.
My latest collection was inspired by the climbing holds at my local bouldering wall and I think this links back to being able to see joy in my mind’s eye and being able to look at something and see it as a piece of jewellery."
So what’s next on the agenda for you – what are your plans? where can we see your work?
"So next on the agenda is sort of levelling up my business, I've got a professional photo shoot coming up which is the first time that my jewellery has been photographed by a professional which is really exciting and I'm in the process of redesigning my workshop to suit me as a maker running a jewellery business rather than suiting me as a hobby jeweller.
You can also find my work in North Yorkshire at The French Press in Thirsk, Plumb in Malton and also on Walter & May’s website."
and finally it's been so lovely chatting with you, do you have any specific other creatives that you really champion and suggest anyone wanting to start out should go check out?
"I always find this question really hard, there's loads of creatives that I really admire. When I find out people are starting their own business or beginning a creative venture there's a couple of people that I point them in the direction of, who I think are really helpful people to learn from.
> The first is Stacey from Grace and Hudson she's a fellow jeweller but is a lawyer turned jewellery business owner and what I love about Stacy is just her take on life, her wisdom and learning from the journey that she's been on.
> The next person is Amy Eaton she's another lovely lady from America and she's a product photographer, you can learn a tonne of stuff from her about taking your own pictures of your product if you are product based business.
> and finally of course Holly Tucker is incredible, she is a champion of small businesses and is incredibly generous in her knowledge and understanding."
"If I could give any advice to someone starting out - it would be to go full throttle with what you do and have a relentless belief that it will work!"
